Experience the past today!  Paddle down the mighty North Saskatchewan River in a voyageur canoe, stopping at Fort Edmonton for a glimpse at the lives of early Albertans and/or stop at Laurier Park and become a fur trapper while playing the fur trader games.

ITINERARY

 
The purpose of this program is to introduce students to life as a voyageur, by paddling a voyageur canoe, the mode of transportation used to travel the North Saskatchewan River. Stop at Fort Edmonton Park to tour the fur trading post if pre-arranged. A preliminary introduction will cover equipment discussion, paddling techniques and water safety. As well, the group will help to unload our canoes. The needs, abilities, and desires of the group will be taken into consideration and the program can be adjusted accordingly. A typical program could run as follows:
   
I. Welcome
Introductions
Explanation of day's schedule
Washrooms, etc.
   
II. History of the Voyageurs
   
III. Equipment Discussion
PFD’s
Paddles
Canoes
   
IV. Techniques for Paddling
Forward stroke
Reverse stroke
Check stroke
   
V. Water Safety Discussion
   
VI. Equipment Distribution and Unloading Canoes (the entire group will need to participate in the loading and unloading of the canoes)
   
VII. Divide into Groups
Load and launch boats
   
VIII. Stop at Fort Edmonton for a Tour Note: this must be requested at the time of booking, there is an extra charge for this

IX. Paddling Fun (On River)
Songs and cheers
Washroom break (depending on length of trip)
Lunch on the river, or at one of the parks along the way
   
X. Stop at Park for Fur Trade Game (Note: this must be requested at the time of booking)
Discussion about the fur trade
Explanation of game
Distribution of game materials
Safety concerns and game boundaries
Game Playing
   
XI. Clean Up and Goodbye
Hang PFD’s to dry
Load boats onto trailer
