MOUNTAIN BIKING

   
 
Grades 4-6, 7-12
Get on a bike, strap on a helmet and follow our instructors to explore the bike trails of Edmonton's River Valley!  Learn bike safety and basic skills.

ITINERARY

 
This program is designed to teach safe cycling. A discussion about the proper fitting of equipment, bike safety, and trail etiquette is part of the program. Depending on the age and skill level of the participants, the program may also include more advanced techniques. A sample program could be as follows:
   
I. Welcome
Introductions
Explanation of day's schedule
Washrooms, water, depositing excess gear, checking clothing
Reminders: garbage, recycle, keeping buildings clean, etc.
   
II. Helmets & Helmet Safety
Explanation of helmet safety
Sizing and distributing helmets
   
III. Bikes
Parts (e.g. seats (adjustments), brakes (front and rear - foot brakes for mini bikes), shifting (when applicable, right and left shifters for front and back derailers - NOTE: students are instructed to keep front derailer on middle ring at all times to avoid cross chaining), tires (proper inflation, not touching quick releases), etc.
Action (i.e. right time to use appropriate technique, when to shift, etc.)
Distribution (appropriate sizing of bikes)
Students: checking all parts
   
IV. Parking Lot Fun (if time permits - excellent for mini programs)
Figure 8's
Proper braking (e.g. red light, green light)
Obstacle course
   
V. Trail Etiquette
Watch for others and yield to smaller/ slower
Control speed
Stay in single file - one bike space between
Telephone line communication
No passing
Hills (if walking move to far right hand side)

VI. Ride
Only on paved trails please!
Hints and suggestions to students if required
Stopping at interesting locations to interpret (optional)
   
VII. Clean Up and Goodbye
Spraying helmets
Checking bikes, stacking, and tagging problem bikes to be set aside
