TANDEM CANOEING

   
 
Grades 4-6, 7-12
Learn the basics of tandem canoeing on flat water.  Basic strokes, safety and fun will be emphasized.

ITINERARY

 
The purpose of this program is to allow students to become familiar with canoe safety and equipment, basic strokes and water safety. A typical session could be as follows. The needs and desires of the group will be taken into consideration and the program can be adjusted accordingly:
   
I. Welcome
Introductions
Explanation of day’s schedule
Washrooms, water, storing baggage
Garbage, recycle, cleaning up
   
II. Equipment Discussion
PFD's
Paddles
Canoes
   
III. Water Safety and Rules for the Canoe
   
IV. Equipment Distribution (and transport if necessary)
   
V. Techniques
How to get in and out of canoes
Balance/weight shifting
Stroke explanation (depending on age group, skill level and time allotted)
  Forward stroke
  Reverse stroke
  Check stroke
  Draw/Pushaway
  Sweeps
  J stroke

VI. Lake/Pond Fun
Relays
Tag games
Ball games
Paddling hints
   
VII. Clean Up and Goodbye
Replace boats and paddles
Hang PFD's to dry
