ITINERARY

 

ABORIGINAL PERSPECTIVE PROGRAM

The purpose of this activity is to introduce direction and navigation to the students. They will have an opportunity to create and interpret maps, use a compass to take a bearing and establish direction of travel, and explore an orienteering course. A typical program would be as follows:
   
I. Welcome
Introductions
Washrooms, water, storage of baggage
Explanation of day's schedule
   
II. Direction Discussion
Navigation using nature
Maps (map creation - students draw a map)
Introducing directions (N,E,S,W) and completing grid exercise
   
III. Compass Work
Parts of compass
How to use
   
IV. Pacing Exercises
Creating a box and a triangle
Other compass games
   
V. Mapped Course
Symbols
Orienting the map
Explanation of controls
Orienteering course
   
VI. Debrief Activity and Clean Up
Gather maps, pencils, compasses
